Biography
Charles Cutting was born in 1973 and grew up in the Yorkshire Dales. He studied art at York College of Arts & Technology and gained his BA in Illustration at the University of the West of England in Bristol in 1995.
Since then Charles has travelled widely throughout Russia, Canada, Mongolia, China, Latin America (where this photograph of him sketching underwater was taken) and Europe, producing comprehensive reportage sketchbooks of the places he has visited and, most recently, painting commissioned murals. Direct observation from life informs all of his artwork and in his watercolours Charles is motivated by the desire to capture the essential character of places that he loves, which he feels can only be achieved by painting en plein air in front of his subject.
Constant practice of working from life has also developed his artistic skills and sensibilities immeasurably since leaving the formal study of art and has allowed him to find a unique style with which to paint the world of his imagination. Charles' desire to create visually exciting work coupled with a love of stories has galvanised Charles to pursue the illustrative side of his work.
He has been based in Oxford for over ten years.
